Local SEO Puts You on the Map

When someone nearby searches for a lawyer, Google often shows a map pack above the ordinary listings. Local SEO is the work that puts your firm on that map.

Google scores the map differently from the listings below it. The profile, the reviews, the listings of your name and address across the web, and how close the searcher is to the office all matter:

Your Google Business Profile, the listing Google builds the map pack from.

Reviews, both how many you have and how steadily new ones arrive.

Citations, the listings of your name, address, and phone number across the web.

Content that ties your firm to its market, on the pages of your own site.

Proximity, which changes with the searcher’s location and is why rankings need to be measured across the market rather than from one desk.

The Map Pack Uses Different Signals Than Organic Search

The local results depend on how closely the firm matches the search, where the office is located, and the public information about the firm. A website can rank organically even when the firm’s map visibility is weak, and the reverse can also happen.

Directories such as Avvo and FindLaw compete for many organic results, but they do not qualify for a law firm’s local profile. Map results give eligible firms another place to compete without first outranking every directory in the organic listings.

The website linked from the profile contributes information about the firm’s services and location. Our law firm SEO services cover the organic side, including content and technical SEO, and we report the local and organic work together when a firm uses both services.

We Manage Your Google Business Profile and the Other Listings

The profile is what Google uses to build the map pack. The primary category alone is what Google matches most searches against, and firms routinely sit in the generic “Law firm” category when a more specific category matches what their best clients search.

The profile also holds services, practice-area descriptions, photos, hours, and questions and answers. Google Posts add current updates directly to the listing. We manage those fields and posts so the public information remains accurate, complete, and current.

Google Business Profile is the one that matters most, because it is what Google uses to build the map pack. We also claim and keep the other profiles consistent, such as Bing Places and Apple Maps, so the name, address, phone number, hours, and categories match across them.

Citations Need Consistent Business Information

Citations are listings of your firm’s name, address, and phone number across sources such as Avvo, FindLaw, Yelp, the state bar, the chamber of commerce, and national data directories. Consistent records give search engines corroborating information about the firm and its location.

Office moves, phone-number changes, and duplicate profiles commonly leave conflicting records across those sources. We identify the material listings, correct outdated information, address duplicates where the platform permits it, and monitor the record as part of the ongoing work.

A listing on your county or city bar association, the chamber of commerce where you practice, or a legal directory your market uses counts for more than another entry in a national data aggregator. Local sponsorships and university alumni directories create the same kind of listing, and we build the ones your firm qualifies for.

We Track Map Rankings Block by Block

Google generates local results for the searcher’s location, and distance is one of the ranking factors. A firm can therefore appear near the top close to its office and much lower several miles away. A search from the office shows only one point in the market.

We track local rankings across a grid of points covering your service area, so the report shows where you hold the map, where a competitor holds it, and whether the line between you is moving, scan by scan.

We also report the qualified leads attributed to the local search work, and the consultations and signed cases those leads become. We set up the CRM connection as part of the work.

Local Services Ads Sit Above the Map Pack

In most legal markets, a sponsored block of Local Services Ads now appears above the map itself, showing attorney photos and a Google Screened badge. Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click, require license verification and background checks, and rank partly on the same review signals this work builds. A firm running both holds two positions on the first screen instead of one.

We manage Local Services Ads alongside search campaigns in our law firm PPC service. Reviews and profile quality are relevant to both Local Services Ads and unpaid map visibility, while the placements remain separate products with separate ranking systems.

Inside a Law Firm Local SEO Program

The right local SEO strategy depends on what the audit of your profile, citations, reviews, and rankings shows. Some law firms need a category fix and a review process, and some need a citation cleanup reaching back through two old addresses. The full local SEO campaign covers:

Google Business Profile optimization and management. Categories, services, photos, posts, and questions and answers, maintained continuously rather than set once, plus a Bing Places listing that matches it.

Citation building and cleanup. Your name, address, and phone made consistent across the legal directories and data aggregators, with old addresses and dead numbers corrected, plus your bar association and chamber of commerce listings where your firm holds the membership.

Review strategy. Automated review requests in wording your firm approves, timed to the moment your firm chooses, plus responses to every review that comes in.

Content for local searches. Practice-area pages optimized for local intent, incorporating local keywords and the courts you appear in, plus the local news coverage and community involvement your firm already has.

Grid-based rank tracking. Map rankings measured across your whole service area, not from one lucky spot.

Plain-English reporting. Map visibility across the market, plus qualified leads and signed cases. We set up the CRM connection as part of the work.

These local SEO efforts run as a standalone service or inside our broader SEO services for lawyers, depending on what your market calls for. We do not represent competing law firms in the same market.

Questions Law Firms Ask About Local SEO

How long does local SEO take to work for a law firm?

Profile corrections can be reflected quickly, while citation changes, review acquisition, and broader ranking movement take longer. We establish the current grid before work begins and report changes over time instead of promising a fixed ranking date.

Why does my firm rank first when I search from my office?

Distance is a ranking factor, and you are standing at your own address. Google shows you a map pack built for your location, which is why we measure across a grid of points instead of trusting any single search result.

Can my firm rank in the map pack in a city where we have no office?

Rarely, whatever anyone promises. The map favors a physical location, so a firm without one competes there through organic rankings and Local Services Ads instead. For firms with multiple offices, local SEO can help every location, because each office gets its own profile and its own campaign.

What happens to local rankings when a firm moves offices?

The Google Business Profile, website, Bing listing, legal directories, and other important citations need the new address. We update the primary records, identify remaining conflicts, and track visibility during the change.

Are Local Services Ads part of local SEO?

They are separate products that share signals. The ads charge per lead and run on their own platform, while the map pack is unpaid, but reviews and profile quality feed both, so the same local SEO helps both placements. We run them together.

How do I choose a local SEO company for my law firm?

Ask what the company manages, what it reports, and whether it measures rankings across a geographic grid rather than from one location. The report should connect visibility with qualified leads and signed cases. Also ask whether the company represents another law firm competing in the same market.

Does my website matter for the map pack?

Yes. The website linked from the profile gives Google information about the firm’s services, location, and authority. When the website needs substantive work, we also provide law firm website design.

Do AI tools like ChatGPT use local signals?

AI assistants may use public business profiles, reviews, directories, and website content when generating local recommendations. We measure whether the firm appears in those answers as part of the SEO work.
